1976

Miller & Associates is Founded

Beginning as a small engineering firm with only three employees in Kearney, Nebraska, Miller & Associates Consulting Engineers, P.C. set out with the simple mission to provide practical solutions and build lasting relationships with the communities we serve.

1977 - 1979

Building a Foundation

Within its first few years, M&A completed its first street, tennis court, well, community center, wastewater lagoon, and water tower projects, marking the beginning of what would be core service lines for the firm. These early projects laid the groundwork for the firm's engineering practice. They also marked the beginning of a relationship-first approach with communities across Nebraska, a value that continues to guide our work today.

1980

Adding Community Development & Funding Services

M&A submitted its first Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application and later administered its first CDBG-funded project. These milestones established a new service area focused on funding assistance and community development.

1981

First Bridge Project Completed

A bridge project in Gosper County, Nebraska, broadened the firm’s transportation and structural engineering experience.

1982

Introducing Surveying Services

The purchase of M&A’s first survey 3 wheeler expanded the firm’s field capabilities and marked the growth of surveying as an integral part of its service offerings.

1984

Introducing Architectural Services

The addition of Helleberg & Helleberg expanded M&A’s services beyond engineering, establishing architecture as a key service offering and creating a more comprehensive approach to serving communities.

1986

Growing Expertise & Regional Reach

The addition of Charles E. Wright, Consulting Engineer strengthened the firm’s engineering capabilities and led to the opening of the McCook office, marking M&A’s first expansion beyond Kearney.

1988

Investing in Technology

The firm’s first AutoCAD system modernized design and drafting processes, helping improve efficiency and project delivery.

1997

Strengthening Surveying Services

Robert D. Temple Surveying joined M&A in 1997, significantly expanding the firm’s surveying expertise and presence in western Nebraska.

2000 - 2005

Expanding Services & Partnerships

The Kearney office moved to its current home at 1111 Central Avenue at the turn of the century, while Great Plains Architecture joined the firm, expanding the architectural services of the organization. During this period, M&A also designed Nebraska’s first regional municipal water system serving Bartley, Indianola, and Cambridge, Nebraska.

2006 - 2009

Growing Across the Region

New offices opened in Colby, Kansas, and Holdrege and Grand Island, Nebraska, allowing the firm to better serve communities throughout Nebraska and Kansas.

2007

Introducing Community & Regional Planning Services

The firm’s first community planning project, Palisade, Nebraska’s Comprehensive Plan, marked the beginning of a planning practice that would grow to include housing studies, park & recreation studies, and zoning & subdivision regulation updates in the future.

2009

Expanding Engineering Expertise

The addition of Tagge Engineering Consultants and a partnership with Rockwell & Associates further strengthened M&A's engineering capabilities and regional presence while expanding the firm's footprint with new offices in Holdrege and Grand Island, Nebraska.

2015

A Nebraska First in Water Treatment

Miller & Associates designed Nebraska's first UV water treatment facility in Kearney, helping advance water treatment technology within the state.

2016

Recognized for Excellence

The firm was named Outstanding Business of the Year by the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce, highlighting the firm’s long-standing dedication to providing quality services.

2022

Expanding into Colorado

The acquisition of Diamondback Engineering established Miller & Associates’ Lakewood, Colorado, office and expanded its service area into the Rocky Mountain Region.

2024

Recognized for Economic Impact

The Development Council for Buffalo County honored M&A with its Business/Businessperson Economic Impact Award.

Continued Growth

M&A opened its North Platte, Nebraska, office, strengthening the firm’s ability to serve communities across Western Nebraska.

As M&A celebrates its 50th anniversary, we reflect on five decades of growth, innovation, and service to the communities we serve. What began as a small engineering firm in Kearney has grown into a trusted team of engineers, surveyors, geologists, archeologists, GIS/CAD specialists, community planners, funding specialists, project management professionals, and administrative staff working together to deliver exceptional results for our communities.

Today, M&A serves communities throughout the region from our headquarters in Kearney, Nebraska, and branch offices in McCook and North Platte, Nebraska, and Colby, Kansas. While our services and reach have expanded over the years, our mission remains the same: building quality relationships, providing exceptional service, and helping our clients create stronger communities through thoughtful planning, design, and infrastructure solutions.

We are grateful to the clients, communities, employees, and partners who have been a part of our story over the past 50 years. As we look ahead, we remain committed to serving our clients at the highest level and are excited for the opportunities, challenges, and accomplishments that the future will bring.
