Infiltration / Inflow Analysis

About

At Miller & Associates, our Infiltration and Inflow (I/I) analysis services help communities better understand and manage excess water entering their wastewater systems. We work alongside local leaders and operators to identify sources of infiltration and inflow, reduce system strain, and improve overall performance, protecting both infrastructure and public investment.

Our team evaluates system conditions using field data, inspections, and flow monitoring to pinpoint problem areas and prioritize improvements. We present clear, practical recommendations that support cost-effective rehabilitation and long-term reliability. Our approach is proactive, helping communities reduce risk, maintain compliance, and extend the life of their wastewater systems.

Features

  • Flow monitoring & data collection
  • CCTV inspection coordination
  • Smoke testing & dye testing
  • System capacity evaluation
  • Defect identification & prioritization
  • Rehabilitation planning & cost analysis

Sanitary Sewer Evaluation & Improvements

Mankato, KS

Miller & Associates partnered with the City of Mankato to assess and rehabilitate its sanitary sewer collection system following increased lagoon flows and recurring maintenance issues. The $2.3 million project included system evaluation, design, and construction services to improve system performance and reduce inflow and infiltration, supported by multiple state and federal funding sources.

Project Features

  • Inspection of ~50,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer via Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV)
  • Identification of inflow/infiltration & root intrusion issues
  • Rehabilitation of sewer mains & manholes
  • Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining
  • Manhole rehabilitation & improvements
  • Street reconstruction associated with utility work

Services We Provided

  • Preliminary Engineering Report (PER)
  • System evaluation & data review
  • Surveying & design
  • Preparation of construction documents
  • Funding coordination
  • Bidding & contract administration
  • Construction observation & on-site support

Miller & Associates worked with the City of Mankato to evaluate and improve its sanitary sewer collection system following increased lagoon flows, lift station surcharging during rain events, and ongoing maintenance challenges caused by root intrusion. Using Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) inspection of approximately 50,000 linear feet of sewer, our team identified areas of inflow and infiltration and developed a clear path forward.

Guided by a Preliminary Engineering Report, the City advanced a $2.3 million rehabilitation project that included Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) lining, manhole rehabilitation, targeted sewer main improvements, and associated street reconstruction. Miller & Associates provided design and construction phase services, helping the City strengthen system performance, reduce maintenance demands, and extend the life of its infrastructure. The project was funded through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), State Revolving Fund (SRF), and USDA-Rural Development programs.
